Co-op Update Week of 9/25/17

Hi Co-op!

Looking forward to a FANTASTIC Fall trip.  A few quick reminders.
2) Gear should be brought in Monday or Tuesday.  We’ll be loading the truck Tuesday around noon.
3) Students should arrive by 7am for Wednesday’s departure.  Buses will pull away at 7:30am. Students who want picture re-takes should arrive at 6:59am.  Make sure to bring a warm jacket, sunscreen, water and lunch on Wednesday.
4) Tuesday is a Platt field-day.  Other than co-op, there will not be “normal” classes on this day.
Have a great week!

Fast Food Nation Update — Week of 9/18 and 9/25

Dear Fast Food Nation Folk,

After settling our own civilizations last week, students have began researching Central American countries to learn more about their geography, history, and culture.  Our next step is to take that research and create ads highlighting both the positive and negative attributes of our country.  To do so, students will be wrestling with two essential questions.
  • How do you determine the quality of life in a given country?
  • How can propaganda shape beliefs?
Here are due dates for this week.
Thursday:  Group slideshow due by 8am.  (Hopefully finished in class on Wednesday)
Monday:  Students should have scripts ready for filming.
Have a fantastic week!
Josh Feiger
Ps.  Given that class only meets three times this week and one time next week (fall trip and all school field day), this will be last Fast Food Nation update until October 2nd.

LA Update — Weeks of 9/18 and 9/25

Last week, we had a fantastic conversation cafe last week on the topic of Beowulf.  We are also continuing to work on sentence structure.  Students should be able to explain the recipe for a “simple sentence” and a “dependent clause” — ask them!
Due to scheduling quirks, there are only four more LA classes until Fall Trip and two of those are “reading days” so this will be the last update until October 2nd.   This week, we’ll be practicing our writing by “exploding moments” to heighten drama and build reader interest.   We’ll also be learning about prepositional phrases, hyperbole, and setting.
Upcoming due dates:  Every night:  Read 30 minutes.
Have a great (two!) weeks!   Thanks so much for all your support,  -JF

Co-op update 9/18/17

Here’s the weekly co-op update.
1) I look forward to seeing everyone at conferences.  Here’s both the schedule and the goal-setting conference format as an fyi…
2) Important update about fall trip:
  • The district has asked us to leave at 7:30am on Wednesday, September 27th.  Buses will be pulling away at that time.  Students should arrive at 7am.
  • Students can bring a daypack with them on the bus, but their duffle and any meds must be dropped off directly to me either Monday, 9/25 or (Preferably) Tuesday, 9/26.  We will be loading the gear truck on Tuesday.  Here’s the packing list fyi…
  • With the time change, we are still working to figure out picture re-takes.  Hopefully, we’ll have an update on this for Wednesday’s CHOICE weekly.

3) Lots of calendar quirks on the horizon.  A few reminders:
  • 9/18:  No school — Monday — PD Day
  • 9/22:  Students should be picked up at 10:31 after 2nd period. Conference Release Day — Friday.
  • 9/26: All school “community day.”  Both Platt and CHOICE will be participating in a field day.  School hours will be the same — but other than co-op, there will be no normal classes on this day.

Thanks for all your continued support.  Have a great week!
Josh Feiger

Fast Food Nation Update — 9/11/17

A few assorted notes from class:
1) We’re off to a terrific start in class as students created food museums and are in the process of settling their civilizations.  They will be presenting their settlements on Tuesday during class.
2) We are headed to the Denver Art Museum on Friday, September 15th.  We’ll be leaving Platt after 1st period and returning around 2pm.  Students should bring a writing utensil, water bottle, and a sack lunch.   We’ll be looking at an exhibit there called “Mi Tierra” — click here for more details on the exhibit itself.
3) We have started the stock market competition.  Most students haven’t bought stocks yet (though a few have).  We’ll be exploring the best ways to invest our $100,000.
4) Students will be researching a food topic of their choosing for our big long term project this semester.  We won’t actually choose the topic until mid/late October, but we’ve started exploring possibilities, including…
  • Commodity Trade (we looked at chocolate or banana)
  • Urban Food Deserts and what communities are doing about them.
  • The history and cultural legacy of particular dishes.  (We watched a short TED talk about General Tso’s Chicken.)
We’ll be brainstorming many more ideas in the coming weeks.
Have a fantastic week!  -JF

LA Update — 9/11/17

Hi Everyone,

Here are some great questions to ask your student at the dinner table:
1) What is the Hero’s Journey? Can you explain it to me?
2) How’s your reading plan going?  What genre are you reading now?
3) What’s an allegory?  (We’ll talk about this on Monday.)
4) Do you think Grendel deserves sympathy?  Why or why not?
This week, we’ll be:
  • Introducing the idea of Allegory as well as reading aloud an excerpt from John Gardner’s Grendel.
  • Introducing the check-in assignment (due Friday by 8am)
  • Enjoying a conversation cafe about Beowulf
Upcoming due dates:
Every night:  Read 30 minutes
Due Friday by 8am:  Check-in #1
Due at beginning of class on Monday, 9/26:  Beowulf Poster Project
Have a great week!  -Josh Feiger

Co-op Update — Week of 9/11/17

Dear Co-op and families,

Not that much to report this week.  A few items:
  • Fall trip forms are due by Wednesday.  Thanks for your help in getting those returned.
  • Our first ADI (All day Integrated) field trip is this Friday.  Students will want a sack lunch and water bottle.
  • Make sure to check for the CHOICE Weekly in your inbox on Wednesdays.
  • Friendly reminder — no school for students on Monday, September 18th.  (District PD day)
  • Service plans.  We’ll work a bit on brainstorming service ideas this week. Note that by the end of the school year, 6th graders need to compile 20 hours.  7th graders — 30 hours.  And 8th graders — 40 hours.  Here are just a few ideas for community service — this would be a great conversation to have with your student.
Have a fantastic week!
Josh Feiger

FFN Update — 9/5/17

I’m so excited for our class to begin!  We’ll see how the semester unfolds — and all of this is subject to change — but here’s the plan.
*Three major projects, including:
  • Quality of Life.  What makes a country “good” for its people?  Students will be creating their own “made-up” country and then researching Central American countries to determine what factors contribute to “quality of life.”   They’ll be using this information to create both positive and attack video ads for their country of choice.
  • Ancient Civilizations.  Students will be studying an ancient civilization of their choosing (Western Hemisphere) and creating a newscast to better understand the GRAPES of that Civilization.  (G=Geography, R=Religion, A=Achievements, P=Politics, E=Economics, and S=Social Structure.)
  • Fast Food Nation.  Students will be researching their own food identities and then choosing one food-related issue to research the historical, economic, environmental, social, and personal components of that topic.  They will be presenting their findings (and their food) at our POL (Presentation of Learning) afternoons on December 5th and 6th.  I’m hoping this will be in IGNITE style — but still working on details. We hope you can join us for your student’s presentation.
*Supplemental work, including:
  • Students will be participating in a stock market simulation game through howthemarketworks.com. — this will give us an opportunity to learn how the stock market works in addition to exploring some basic economic principles.
  • We’ll be reading excerpts from the young reader’s edition of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  It’s got some wonderful explanations of the origins of our food and our food choices.
  • Geographic Mapping.  Our focus this year is on the Western Hemisphere and we’ll be playing games to learn basics about this half of the globe.
  • And hopefully lots of other fascinating ideas too (Banana economics, The Story of Stuff, The Huexotzinco Codex, etc…)
*Three ADIs (All Day Integrated) field trips
  • Denver Art Museum on September 15th to see a special exhibit entitled “La Tierra.”
  • Museo De Las Americas to tour the museum, learn about the history of the Tortilla (and make them too), and to learn about the art of protest on November 17th.
  • And as yet an undetermined field trip on October 27th to explore the “food-industrial” complex.  (If you have ideas for this, please let me know.  I’m still researching possibilities.)
Students should plan on bringing a writing utensil to class daily.   At this point, there is nothing “due” — but this will change as we start both the stock market simulation and the create a country project to launch the course.
Have a wonderful week!  -JF

LA Update — Week of 9/5/17

Last Thursday, we introduced Joseph Campbell’s concept of the “Hero’s Journey.”   We’ll be using this “Hero’s Journey” idea to both better understand story structure and also to write our own “hero’s journey” stories starting in a few weeks.  If you are interested, here’s a link to a quick video on the “Hero’s Journey  and/or a textual one too just as a refresher.
In class this week, we’ll be mapping the story of Beowulf to the Hero’s Journey.  Depending on timing, we may act/learn about some alternative versions of Beowulf to learn how stories can be changed and manipulated in their teachings.
If they haven’t done so already, I would highly encourage you to ask your student to tell you the story of Beowulf.  It’s great practice as we get more and more familiar with this text.
Upcoming due dates:
Every night (or as much as possible):  Read 30 minutes.
Friday: “Hero’s Journey” assignment.  We’ll be working on this in class.  This assignment needs to be handed in via paper copy — and not electronically.  Students seeking an “advanced extension” should try to additionally chart a book or movie of their choosing.  Disney or superhero movies work especially well for this — but any movie/text will work.
Have a fantastic week!

Co-op Update — Week of 9/5/17

We had a fantastic day at the Regatta yesterday.  Our co-op paparazzi were amazing in their costumes and support and our phenomenal 8th graders not only engineered a boat that didn’t fall apart, but also powered their way to a stellar 2nd place finish.  It was a great day!  Updates:
1) Integrated classes start Tuesday.  I posted a list of our co-op’s integrated classes for both Fall and Spring on Google Classroom if students need a reminder.
3) Friendly reminder — if you haven’t signed up for a September conference yet, please do so here.
4) Fall trip forms went home last week.  Thanks for your help in returning those as quickly as possible.  If you are interested in joining us on the fall trip, please let me know.  (You will need to go through the district’s volunteer background check first.)
5) As a parent of a middle-school student myself, I thought this article on apps to help navigate screen-time was particularly interesting.  I just wanted to share the resource — feel free to click or ignore.
Thanks again for all your support!   -JF
